Welcome to this webinar with Johannes Schmidt from the Institute for Sustainable Economic Development, at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, who will talk about biomass renewables in energy systems.
The role of biomass in future low-carbon energy systems is highly contested: bioenergy allows for a firm supply of energy, being an important complement to intermittent renewables. However, the expansion of biomass utilization also runs the risk to increase carbon emissions due to carbon-cycle feedbacks. Increasing the efficiency of biomass use in the energy sector, maximizing its value to the energy systems is therefore of outmost importance.
We report here on two modeling studies which (a) aim at integrating intermittent renewables with sugarcane ethanol production to increase the land-use and CO2 efficiency of Brazilian biofuel production and (b) assess the use of bioenergy to balance intermittent renewables in electricity systems with high shares of renewables. We will also address the challenges involved in modelling these systems and associated future research avenues.
The webinar will be hosted by Elisabeth Wetterlund, professor of energy engineering at Luleå University of Technology and researcher within Trees For Me.
